Lessons From My Dad – A Tribute To Father’s Day

No one in my life has ever been more well-equipped to give me advice than my family. In particular, on this Father’s Day weekend, I’d like to shout out my dad. He’s seen me at my best and my undoubtably my worst, and walked me through some of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make. I without a doubt take after him in almost every way imaginable (I mean, look at the resemblance below), and I don’t know where I’d be today without him.

Starting the very night that he and my mom dropped me off my freshman year of college, for every significant milestone in my life, he has sent me an email of advice, of life lessons, of “here are things I wish I knew when I was your age”. As a Father’s Day tribute, I decided to include some of his most poignant words, things I think we can all take to heart not only today but every day. I love ya dad, thank you for everything.

I love you more than you could ever know, and someday in the future you will experience the same with your own children.

Courage comes in many forms. Having the courage to stand up for your beliefs and using the God given skills you have to write and speak forcefully about the things that really matter to you are as a person and the world you live in is one version of that. Continue to be courageous.

No matter what, I’m behind you all the way, always.

Never forget how much you have already accomplished. Know how much you have already grown and matured. Now go get ’em.

Go forth strongly and with determination.

Once you set your mind to something, there is no stopping you. Everything you have truly set your mind to do you have done and done well.

Nothing worthwhile in life ever really seems to come easy. If you truly want something you must work for it. I guess that’s what makes it taste so sweet when you do get it.

At the same time, sometimes as much as we want something or somebody that for a million reasons we don’t understand in this life we simply don’t get them. Maybe that’s the place in God’s heaven where we get the answers to those questions.

Your family will always be there for you. Blood is thicker than water, so if you need help ask any one of us and we will always try to do the best we can to help you… but remember that might not always be in the way you want.

Time seems to heal most wounds. Even with the darkest of times, you will someday sit down, look back, and wonder where the time went.

The real value of a college diploma is what it says about you. That you set a goal for yourself and didn’t stop until you accomplished it. Whatever career track you finally settle on it’s yours, be happy with what you choose and don’t worry about what anyone else might think of that choice.

Pray now and then. By that I mean never forget to talk with a higher power. Ask for any help, direction or strength that you need and be thankful and say so when your prayers are answered.

Get rest when you need it, exercise, eat right and seek out kindred spirits. Surprisingly, all will eventually fall into place.

Don’t suffer fools gladly. If someone isn’t treating you right, find someone else. Remember you have at least billions of other chances to find someone who does treat you right. Make them fret over wanting to be with you rather than the opposite.

Enjoy life and always remember that my love and support continues in effect forever.

Go back and re-read # 1. It really is the only important one. Remember Jesus said that Faith, Hope and Love were all gifts given to us but that Love was the greatest gift. Accept that you are loved.
